Busy times at WRF!

What a crazy week! We have had everything from perfect temperatures and snow, to rain, to a small storm.  The program took the day off on December 25th and we have been hammering the mountain everyday. After our day off, we have seen an increase in athlete attendance each day. Today, we had roughly 265 athletes on snow!

We have had an array of things going on throughout the week despite some challenging weather. Our grooming and snowmaking teams have been doing everything they can to continue to provide a surface for the general public and for us. I have said it before, but we are so fortunate to have a dedicated trail for training. We had all of the athletes slipping the hill at the completion of the day to avoid the need to groom. We had such an amazing surface all week that we didn't want to run the risk of grooming and ending up with a less than ideal surface. Having a high quality surface allows our athletes to get the most out of their time in the training environments - quality surface = quality training. We have been fortunate to have some members of the ASF Race Team join us for training. Our own Mia Steinberg has had the opportunity to guide for Paralympian Staci Mannella!

On December 27th, NYSSRA Youth Coordinator Steve Mergenthaler made a program visit and was able to work with many of our athletes. In the morning he spent time with the U14 athletes working on stance and balance. They took a few focused free runs with Steve and the U14 staff and then came to Warm Up to ski in a corridor with a blue line down the middle to help with transition timing. On the lower half of Warm Up they had an apex SL set that forced turn shape and balance. In the afternoon, it was time for all of our youth teams to come over to Warm Up to work through the skills environments. It was a busy afternoon but it was great to see all of the athletes have the opportunity to work through the skills sections and work with Steve. Youth Coordinators are becoming a bigger part of each state and it was great to have Steve visit us so early in the season. We hope to see him back this winter to see the progress we have made!

We had some alternative rainy day activities as groups managed the weather. We had groups working on functional movement in Seasons, chalk talks, and a great tuning clinic with former Windham Race Factory athlete, Victor Wiacek for our older athletes.

We have our first hosted races of the season coming up very soon - January 12th and 13th! If you haven't already, please register to volunteer at one of our home races. To host quality events that we are proud of, we need your help! It is the closest you can get to the action - Register here!

We are heading into 2019 with a growing program, new and continued friendships, and an amazing group of coaches who are fired up to work with the athletes everyday. We have many exciting days ahead of us as all groups are heading into their competition schedule within 3 weeks!
