February Flyby!

I know February is the shortest month, but it's hard to believe that we just flew through the final weekend of the month. It's seems that not long ago we were preparing for the first weekend of program with our coaches clinic. The remainder of Flex Week Training was incredible. We had a perfect surface for the high volume days we wanted to offer our athletes. The coaching staff saw great progress throughout the week with all of our athletes running double sessions. The U14/16/19 teams trained GS and SL each day while our U8/10/12 athletes worked on free skiing skills and drills in the morning, followed by an afternoon training session with a different style set each day.

Our athletes have come so far under the guidance of the coaching staff. It was amazing watching the final Mini World Cup yesterday and seeing how much the athletes have progressed since our first MWC. This season we put an added focus on using the MWC as a learning environment not just for the athletes, but for the parents and coaches as well. We flooded the hill with volunteers to help educate parents about the various volunteer positions such as Gate Judge, Hand Timer, Start and Finish Referee, Course Maintenance, and Registration help. People tried a variety of positions and it was great to see them coming back for more each weekend we hosted a MWC. On the coaching side, we offered assistant positions where they could learn more about being Chief of Race, Chief of Course, Technical Delegate, and Referee. With the added emphasis on the learning environment, our families and staff gained valuable experience that will continue to help us grow as a program and get better at everything we do.

Our U12 team traveled to Belleayre for a one-day Flight Camp on Saturday. The day started with an indoor session about safety, skills, and the day ahead of them. Once on snow, they worked through SG sections and a jump progression which prepared them for the afternoon session of full length runs with a speed trap. WRF athletes dropped the hammer on the council with many of them posting top speeds of 42 MPH or more. Coaches came home boasting about how much fun the athletes had running speed and taking flight. Next year, we will offer more speed opportunities in-house for our athletes to run speed. The skills gained are incredibly important as they progress onto longer skis as a U14 and beyond.

Our U16 and 19 teams were competing in their respective state championships over the weekend. The U19's raced the first two days at West Mountain while the U16's raced their first two days at Gore before switching locations for the final day. Both teams had quality results and many are moving on to compete in regional championship series. Congratulations to Max Fromm as he was the Overall Champion at U19 States! It is never easy spending a majority of the season on the road chasing races. When you are primarily a weekend athlete, it can be quite the grind but one of the best parts of spending so much time on the road is the strong friendships and camaraderie that is developed. This group still has a month remaining of their competitive season. Congrats on a great State Championships and wish them luck for the rest of their season as they continue to be road warriors representing WRF!
